GARDEN TO STUDIO

Throughout my science teaching career and travels, I enjoyed photographing Nature. From the majestic Grand Canyon and other geologic wonders to the tiniest of plants in my garden, I used pictures of these marvels for instruction in my classroom, as well as for the subjects of my paintings.

Here's a glimpse into my painting process. In one patch of my garden, I selected a yellow parrot tulip. I use photography to capture the fleeting shadows that make a for a dramatic watercolor.

This particular tulip attracted my eye because of the vivid contrast of the red stripes on the yellow petals, the bright green leaves, the shadows, and the shapes of the petals. You can see from the resulting watercolor painting “Yellow Tulip,” that Georgia O’Keeffe’s work continues to have a major influence on my painting!
