Recap: Recent UMHS Sporting Achievements

Girls bowling team become Suburban One champs; Girls diving team sweeps PIAA District One Championships

It's been a great time for Upper Moreland High School sports, as many students and their respective teams have recently begun--or already completed--their run towards a championship.

In an effort to recognize the achievements and record-setting performances of this year's group of teams, the Upper Moreland Patch is happy to present you with a breakdown of where each team currently stands, as well as the names and statistics of some of the more incredible individual and team performances.

Bowling

The UMHS Boys and Girls Bowling team recently participated in the Suburban One League Championship at the Brunswick Zone, with Jarryd Goldstein earning the fourth-place medal and Kimberly Searles earning the second-place medal.

In the scratch division, Britny Kabic earned a second-place medal with a 543 series, Stephanie Lamb earned a third-place medal with a 538 series and Brielle Erb earned a fourth-place medal with a 533 series.

The Girls Varsity bowling team were crowned as the Suburban One League American Conference champions following their dominating record of 51 wins to only 5 losses.  The team will now advance to the Regional Bowling Tournament, where Erb and Kabic will compete individually on March 2nd, and the team will compete as a whole on March 3rd.

Diving

The UMHS Boys District One Diving Team recently competed in the PIAA District One Championships at Upper Dublin High School, with Senior Kyle Platt finishing third and Freshman Jelani Crosby finishing sixth.

Not to be outdone, the UMHS Girls Diving Team completed a sweep at the PIAA District One Championships.  Senior Natalee Szopo won her third district diving crown in four years, and Sophomore Sydney Szopo finished second for the second consecutive year.  Freshman Shannon Chambers, who was participating in her first district diving competition, sealed the sweep with a third-place finish.

Natalee and Sydney will now advance to the State Championships which will be held at Bucknell on March 15th and 16th.

Indoor track

Freshman Tyler Whitmore placed 7th in the 60-meter Dash and 14th in the 200-meter Dash at the Pennsylvania Indoor Track Championships this past weekend.  Whitmore had previously set school records in the 60-meter Dash and the 200-meter Dash, and a press release from UMHS states that Whitmore in one of the top-ranked 9th-graders in the entire nation in the aforementioned sprints.

Senior Jacob Soltis, who broke his own school record earlier in the season, finished 8th in the Long Jump.

Wrestling

UMHS wrestlers Paul Scott and Artem Imnadze have advanced to the Regional Wrestling Tournament, which will be held at Oxford High School on March 2nd and March 3rd.

Basketball

The UMHS Boys Basketball team had their season come to an end following an 48-35 loss in the District One Class AAA boys basketball quarterfinal.

Despite the loss, the eighth-seeded Bears put forth a valiant effort, and stayed within striking distance for most of the second half.
