Whiz Kid: Emma Joyce

Joyce has one busy senior year ahead of her.

doesn’t like to slow down. The Upper Moreland senior can be found just about everywhere at her school.

Joyce is one of Upper Moreland’s most active students. She is involved in everything from sports to music to community service.

“It’s a little difficult at times,” said Joyce. “There are a lot of late nights. I get by, and I love all of the things that I’m doing. For different reasons, I wouldn’t stop doing any one of them. I have fun.”

The fun includes Joyce’s time as president of the . She is serving on the executive board and is also the club’s historian.

“I’ve always been a person who really likes to be busy,” Joyce said.  “It’s really a great honor to be Key Club president. I’m really looking forward to being president the rest of the year. It’s a lot fun, and it’s for great causes.”

Joyce’s time with the Key Club is only the tip of the iceberg.

She is a member of the National Honor Society and also participates in marching band, orchestra, drama, and lacrosse. She is heavily involved in her church youth group and is a member of the choir and bell choir.

Another project Joyce is involved with is the Bear Buddies, an organization which provides high-quality developmental child care.

“We work with special-ed kids,” said Joyce. “We go on field trips with them. This year, we’re going to try and do some parties and a movie night. It’s so much fun, and it’s such a great experience. It’s the reason I wanted to major in special education.”

Music has always been one of Joyce’s favorite activities. While singing has always been a part of her life, Joyce still manages to make time for the and orchestra.

“Music is something I’ve always loved to do since I was little,” Joyce said. “I’ve been in choir ever since I was in kindergarten. I joined the band because I like playing instruments. I’ve always loved music.  Singing is kind of more what I love to do, but I stick with the band because I love being with the people so much.”

Spring is perhaps the busiest time for Joyce. In addition to her time with the Key Club, Bear Buddies and musical activities, Joyce keeps busy on the lacrosse field. The practice time, along with game days, adds plenty of extra hours onto Joyce’s busy calendar.

“I like being able to do a lot of different things,” said Joyce. “It’s really just a great time. I love the sport of lacrosse. Now, I’m the goalie, and I love it.”

It would appear the sky is the limit for Joyce. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and is looking at several different college choices. Joyce’s work with Bear Buddies has created a passion for helping special-ed children, and Joyce has her sites set on being a special education teacher.

“I always knew I wanted to go into education,” Joyce said. “I’ve always loved kids, and I love the idea of teaching. The Bear Buddies cause has helped me decide I want to be a special-ed teacher, so I want to major in that.”
