Upper Saucon Environmental Advisors Discuss Creek Erosion Concerns
Grandfathered development not required to comply with stream bank protection measures

Members of the Upper Saucon Environmental Advisory Council discussed, at their February 15 meeting, the concerns of an improperly maintained riparian buffer in the Whispering Pines subdivision.
Whispering Pines, created in 2008, is located on the south side of Liberty Road just off Main Street and south of the Route 309-Main Street-Route 378 intersection in Center Valley. The concerns involve the dozen or so homes that have a stream frontage along the south bank of the Saucon Creek.
Possible erosion along the creek could be major problem. It appears too many trees are being cut down and not replaced with new trees or other plant life. EAC member Erin Frederick said there is information available at the township office about plants and trees recommended for planting along the banks of the creek to help prevent erosion.

New zoning laws were enacted in 2009 that provide additional riparian buffer protections. However, because this zoning ordinance was enacted after the subdivision was created, Whispering Pines is grandfathered and not required to comply.
“This is an environmentally sensitive area,” according to township manager Tom Beil. A letter describing how to properly maintain the area will be sent to landowners. If necessary, Frederick said she will arrange a time to meet with the owners to discuss ways to care for the land. But, because the subdivision is grandfathered, the zoning laws cannot be enforced, she said.

Also, the council briefly reviewed the plans for the April 16 clean-up day. Residents will be able to drop off electronics, appliances, and other items at the township building. Frederick will organize volunteers for the litter clean-up. All trash bags and gloves will be provided by Lehigh County.
The EAC welcomed newcomer Alfred Cancellieri. He was appointed as the Planning Commission liaison to the council.
