CENTENNIAL SCHOOL DISTRICT ANNOUNCES TEACHER WILL RECEIVE THE 2015 DELAWARE VALLEY ENGINEERS WEEK OUTSTANDING SCIENCE TEACHER AWARD

The Delaware Valley Engineers Week Committee has selected Ignacio Jayo, William Tennent High School science teacher.

Warminster, Pennsylvania – The Delaware Valley Engineers Week Committee has selected Ignacio Jayo, William Tennent High School science teacher, to receive the 2015 Delaware Valley Engineers Week Outstanding Science Teacher Award for excellence in teaching. Mr. Jayo will be recognized at the Delaware Valley Engineers Week Awards Luncheon on Friday, February 20, 2015, at the Doubletree Hotel in Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Engineering Foundation, in conjunction with the Delaware Valley Engineers Week Committee of the Engineers’ Club of Philadelphia, administers the Outstanding Math, Science, and Engineering Teachers Award as part of the celebration of Delaware Valley Engineers Week. The awards help recognize and promote the engineering profession and education by recognizing remarkable math and science teachers. Three teachers (one math, one science, and one engineering instructing in grades 6 through 12) in the Delaware Valley will receive the award. In addition, award recipients receive a nominal check to assist in support of their activities.

Through his work at William Tennent High School, Mr. Jayo has been an integral part of curricular development and rigorous scientific instruction in the Centennial School District community for the past 10 years. He currently teaches Honors Anatomy and Physiology, a Biology class specifically designed and created for our ELL students, as well as a Genetics of Cancer course he created while working in conjunction with researchers from Fox Chase Cancer Center. Additionally, he has worked diligently to incorporate technology into his curriculum with practical, engaging, and challenging experiences for his students.

In addition to his dedication to excellent instruction, his work has been commended beyond the halls of William Tennent High School and has been recognized at the state and national levels. He has showcased his work with the Genetics of Cancer course at the PASA/PSBA Excellence Fair. Additionally, the National Association for Research in Science Teaching (NARST) Program Committee has accepted his proposal to be presented as a Stand-Alone Paper at the 2015 NARST Annual International Conference in Chicago.

With a strong academic background in the sciences and education as an undergraduate of Manhattan College and as a graduate student of Duke University as well as the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Jayo’s intellectual curiosity continues to drive his ability to instruct and pursue new academic challenges for Centennial School District students.
