PHOTOS: Making Ukrainian Easter Eggs

Eastern European ethnic groups such as Bulgarians, Slovakians, Czechs, Hungarians and more decorate a pysanka or a Ukrainian egg as part of an Easter tradition.

These eggs are decorated by using the Batik method, which is writing on the eggs using melted bees wax. The wax is applied to the eggs with a kistka, or a stylus, and is usually decorated with traditional folk motifs, using specific colors that represent different religious principles, such as faith, patience, purity and more.

This year we tried one design that incorporates a flower, the ram's horn and ends in red dye. The flower represents life, growth, love and charity, while the ram's horn represents strength and leadership. The red dye signifies happiness, hope and passion.
