Christ Church invites all to enjoy the annual All
Saints concert. The performance will feature Ralph Vaughan Williams’
“Dona Nobis Pacem” sung (in English) by the 75-voice Chancel Choir.
“Dona Nobis Pacem” is a thrilling and compassionate work,
demonstrating the composer’s belief that music and life were closely related to
one another. Linda Williams, director, says, “It is at once excruciating, comforting,
and hopeful. Though ‘Dona Nobis Pacem’ was composed during the Civil War, it
continues to be relevant for all time. The text and music fit beautifully
together.” With poignancy and pathos comes the realization that war and sinful
humanity do not have the last word, but that God’s Word is over all.
“It is not easy for any choir, but for everyone it is
worthwhile,” said Williams. It builds to a thrilling finale with a vision of a
world at peace and a jubilant proclamation of “Glory to God in the highest,
peace on earth, good will to all.” It has a tender finish with a return of the
prayer “Dona Nobis Pacem, grant us peace.”
