NEW BARN OWL NESTING BOX at GILFILLAN HOMESTEAD
Saturday May 18 is Upper St. Clair Community Day and Armed forces Day. Check out the newly installed upright owl box at the Gilfillan Big Barn. The goal is to focus on habitat issues by assessing the foraging, nesting and roosting of the Barn Owl. The farms ecosystem is the perfect habitat with its open areas, grassy fields, wet meadows and plethora of food such as Meadow Voles (rodents), shrews and large insects. You can physically identify the species by a white heart shaped facial disk, no ear tufts and long feathered legs. Interested in incorporating a Barn Owl Nesting Box into your personal ecosystem? On site data will be available. KIDS - visit the side porch craft area where the “owlets” are waiting for you. Two lucky crafters will be winners of an “OWLstanding” souvenir! From noon until 4, Gilfillan house tours are ongoing along with wagon rides, milking of the cows and lots of lively farm fun. Handicap parking is at the rear, just off Orr Road. General parking and entry is at the front garden lane. For further information, The Historical Society of Upper St Clair is now cyber accessible at www.hsusc.org for enjoyment and education.
