Upper St. Clair Grads to Play at SXSW

In case anyone in Upper St. Clair or the South Hills might have a little SXSW (South by Southwest) fever, there is a local connection. The band “Grandchildren” is headed there now (played in Atlanta Monday night and played in New Orleans Tuesday night.)  The electro-acoustic sextet has three members who are Upper St. Clair grads.

Tristan Palazzolo is ths son of Gifted Education Coordinator Pat Palazzolo.  Back in his high school days, he played both trombone and drums for the jazz band and wind symphony and was also in the Governor’s School for the Arts.

John Vogel played trumpet for the school bands and was the John Phillip Sousa Award winner for the high school.

Adam Katz is the third USC grad in Grandchildren and plays guitar/bass.

A couple of years ago, “Grandchildren” played at the high school during International Education Week and frontman/composer Aleks Martray also did a presentation for the students about his work on mural projects with children in Nicaragua. (The three non-USC band members have lived all over the world due to coming from military families -- and one member is actually from Croatia.)  All the guys are multi-instrumentalists, so their live show is really something to see.

Although the band's music has been featured in an MTV series and used as bumper music by NPR, in the social media "Twitter World" of today, "Grandchildren" truly appreciates the help of any South Hills residents willing to help them create some awareness.

Here are a couple of recent articles about the band:

Here are a couple of their older songs:
