GOP - A Safe Haven for Haters?

Republican National Committee Member Dave Agema Slanders Gay Americans - Does the Party Have a Death Wish?

It would appear that the Republican Party has a death wish.  It tolerates individuals like Michigan's GOP National Committee member Dave Agema, who recently posted at Facebook his belief that homosexuals lead a "filthy" lifestyle, that they are responsible for half of the murders in large cities, and that they are responsible in large part for the rising cost of health care due to AIDS.

I find it interesting that gay Americans would be targeted when it is heterosexuals that have destroyed the institution of marriage through rampant divorce and spousal and child abuse.  Taking even a cursory look at the number of vicious and sometimes violent custody battles, which wreck the lives of innocent children, demonstrate what heterosexuals have done for the institution of marriage.

Mr. Agema arrogantly stands by his outrageous statements, asserting that he was merely parroting the words of what is apparently another homophobe and hater.  He refuses to resign despite widespread condemnation even from within the GOP.

When one has an agenda, it is easy to develop "facts" to support it, as Mr. Agema has done.  As he engages in a push to marginalize gay Americans, I do not imagine he has any interest in noting that murders are largely committed against black people by black people in large cities or that health care costs are rising not largely because of the incidence of AIDS, but because the majority of Americans eat a junk diet and are largely sedentary, smoke, and consume alcohol to excess, bringing about obesity, heart disease, cancer, and stroke, to cite a few self-inflicted maladies.  We are the sickest population on earth, consuming the vast majority of the world's dangerous, side-effect laden drugs, which treat symptoms rather than provide cures.  Rather than to consider a healthy lifestyle to stave off illness, we treat it, insisting that our doctors provide us a pill or tablet to address every ache and pain.

A position in opposition to expanding the definition of marriage to include gay Americans is perfectly legitimate.  The asserttion of falsehoods based on a 1980's "study", however, is outrageous and beyond the pale. Sadly, many will believe it because we have a tendency to accept what fits with our preconceived notions and biases.

I find it stunning that a member of the NRC cannot be removed for misconduct which harms the party and the nation.  So long as there are prominent members of the Republican Party like Dave Agema, I will be embarrassed to be a member and will have contempt for it.
