Citizens' Police Academy Signups Being Taken Now in Upper St. Clair

The once-per-week academy is free to enroll in.

It's more than just local ordinances, crimes and the vehicle code. But you'll sure learn about those things, too.

The 2103 Upper St. Clair Citizens' Police Academy, which starts on Oct. 8 and lasts until Nov. 12, is a free-to-enroll course that teaches local residents about citizens' rights, criminal investigations, the U.S. Constitution and many other topics.

In order to attend the academy, you must submit an application by Oct. 1. You can mail or deliver that application to the Upper St. Clair Township Police Department at 1820 McLaughlin Run Rd., Upper St. Clair, PA 15241.

The academy's classes are conducted at the USC police headquarters once per week. The course syllabus includes instruction and scenario-based training.

    Objectives include:
  • An overview of the criminal justice system
  • Local ordinances, crimes and vehicle code issues
  • The U.S. Constitution and citizens' rights
  • Firearms safety, use of force and defensive tactics
  • Patrol procedures, traffic stops, speed enforcement and officer safety
  • Criminal, drug and gang investigations
  • Domestic crimes, custody disputes and missing children
  • The role of the district attorney and the district court
  • Local crimes, current investigations, programs and public issues
