Earthquake Felt in Upper St. Clair, Pittsburgh

An earthquake of a magnitude of 5.8 was felt in Pittsburgh on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey's website, the earthquake occurred at 1:51 p.m. in Richmond, VA, and sent shockwaves along the east coast as far north as Toronto, Canada.

Township Manager Matthew Serakowski said there are no reports of damage from the earthquake in Upper St. Clair. He said he did not feel the quake, but some people working in the said they felt a slight shake.

Some Upper St. Clair residents reported feeling the quake in their homes. 

"I did! I felt it on my couch—thought maybe my dog had pushed it with her legs during a stretch or something but she was nowhere around!" Laura Muhl wrote on Upper St. Clair Patch's Facebook page.

"I was ready to yell at the kids for jumping around upstairs, until I realized they were sitting quietly!" Sarah Heindel Maddigan wrote.

"Felt it here in USC, Southern Hilands Dr.," Gregory Widmer wrote.

"I felt it—USC in Fox Chase neighborhood," Shelly Israel Snyder wrote.

"Felt it at work in McMurray!" Cara Hesse wrote.

In Washington County, a 911 supervisor said the office was inundated with phone calls regarding the aftershocks of the earthquake but confirmed there has been no damage or injuries reported countywide.

Nearby in Mt. Lebanon, officials reported no damage. However, firefighters were checking on buildings as a precaution. Government officials remind residents to only call 911 for emergencies.

The American Red Cross reported not having any requests for assistance following the earthquake throughout the 13 county southwestern Pennsylvania region.
