Join us for the Chancel Choir Spring Concert and experience the Psalms in a whole new way. The evening will be based on music of the Psalms, the pivotal work being Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein. Chichester is scored for choir, soloist, harp and percussion – our harpist will be Julia Scott, and our percussionist, Bert Lerini.
Each movement comprises one complete Psalm and a portion of another Psalm. The music is classical in style with elements of jazz, blues, and Broadway. Commissioned for the 1965 annual choral festival at Chichester Cathedral, Sussex, UK, the dean of the Cathedral said, “Many of us would be delighted if there was a hint of West Side Story about the music.” Not only is there a hint, but some sections originally intended for West Side Story were used in Chichester Psalms instead. Some of the music is lyrical and lovely, and some rhythmic and exciting; all befitting the words of the Psalms. Childcare will be provided
