The fact that four Pittsburgh Pirates have been named to this year's All-Star Game Team is a tribute to Bucs' Manager Clint Hurdle's lobbying efforts and San Francisco Giants Manager Bruce Bochy's sense of decency and fair play.
Yes, the Pirates currently have the best record in all of baseball, but that does not serve to guarantee selections for the mid-summer classic. No Pirate was elected by popular fan vote, thus the final selections hinge solely on the discretion of the manager of the team. I will hope that Andrew McCutchen, Pedro Alvarez, Jason Grilli, and Jeff Locke will all get to play and will represent our team well and make us proud.
I would note that this embarrassment of riches occurs as the once-mighty Los Angeles Dodgers have had just one player selected for the team, pitching great Clayton Kershaw.
This is a time of unprecedented joy for a Pirates fan base starved for good news.
To Clint Hurdle, I say, "kudos" and to Bruce Bochy, "Thank you, sir"! The eyes of the nation's baseball fans will be on our best-in-baseball Pirates come the 16th of July!
