Four USC Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Finalists

The quartet now wait to learn if they will get the prestigious scholarships.

UPPER ST. CLAIR, PA - Four Upper St. Clair High School seniors were recently named Finalists in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. Reese A. Benonis, Samuel Ding, Serena Luo and Grace A. Wagner were selected on the basis of their SAT scores, grades, essays and letters of recommendation.

The students last September were named semifinalists in the competition for scoring in the top one percent of all juniors completing the PSAT in October 2017.

“We are so proud that our four seniors who have advanced from Semifinalist to National Merit Finalists – this is an enormous accomplishment for these students,” high school principal Louis Angelo said. “Their achievements within and beyond the classroom have positioned them for great success after high school.”

The seniors are now competing for National Merit Scholarships that will be announced this spring. The program awards three types of scholarships: National Merit $2,500 Scholarships, Corporate-Sponsored Merit Scholarships and College-Sponsored Merit Scholarships
