High School Athletes Take Run for Fun Victories

For the first time, organizers were forced to turn runners away before registration time expired.

Two cross country and track athletes won Upper St. Clair Community Day's Run for Fun on Saturday.

Senior Conor Klutch officially finished the race first with an unofficial time of 18:38.

"I was pushing for time to see how I progressed from cross country," he said. "It was my best by 22 seconds.

"The race was nice, kind of rough because of the heat, other than that a good race."

Klutch will be running for a Penn State Behrend next year.

Sophomore Angelica Lucas finished first among females and said she was happy with her time, which was just under 21 minutes.

"It was hilly and hot," she said.

For the first time ever this year, race organizers were forced to turn interested runners and walkers away before the registration time expired. The reason? This was also the first year the race used professional timing, according to race Coordinator Heather Slingler. Director of Recreation Paul Besterman said they ran out of race bibs.

Interested runners and walkers were still allowed to race with the other participants, however, they couldn't run through the official finish line to receive their time or enjoy any of the after-race refreshments.

One of the runners who was turned away from registration finished the race before the official race winner, but his time couldn't be counted.

Slinger said organizers are pushing for more people to pre-register next year.

"It makes it more enjoyable for everyone," she said. "We don't want anyone to miss out."

Besterman said participants will receive a chip for their shoe next year, which will make race times even more accurate.

Aramark, , , , , Moe's Southwest Grill and Restorations Physical Therapy were sponsors of the race.
