National Champ: Upper St. Clair Boy Wins Baseball Crown in New York

Jacob Hufnagel is in NYC with the other great Pittsburgh ballplayers.

While most Pittsburghers were busy seeingΒ how Pedro Alvarez was doing on Monday nightβ€”"El Toro" was eliminated in the first round of MLB's Home Run Derbyβ€”Jacob Hufnagel was already celebrating winning a national championship for the 'Burgh.

Jacob, an 8-year-old from Upper St. Clair Township, is in New York City withΒ Alvarez and four other Pittsburgh Pirates all-stars, and on Monday before the Derby, Jacob bested two other national finalists to win the 7-8-year-old boys' Pitch, Hit & Run competition at Citi Field.

Scores are calculated by a formula that combines contestants' baserunning speed (from second base to home plate, using Major League distances), throwing accuracy (targets) and hitting distance and location (from a tee).

Jacob is a righthand-hitting, 4 foot 1 inchΒ shortstop in theΒ Upper St. Clair Athletic Association.
