U Rock Music Center is excited to announce that there
will be a Songwriting Course offered every Saturday at 11:00am through
the month of June (2014). This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about
the songwriting process and strengthen their musicianship. We intend to
create a student-centered learning environment so each
student can receive personalized attention and guidance through the
class. The goal of the class is to provide the tools needed for
successful songwriting. During this course, we will be helping each
student write their own song, which will be recorded at U Rock Music
Center during the last class.
To gain a better understanding of what will be taught in each class, here is the general outline of the curriculum:
Class 1: The Creative process
Identifying and defining the key components of a song.
Examining song structures and why these structures work well together.
Exploring various methods on how to generate song ideas.
Generalizing specific ideas to reach a wider audience.
Approaching writing strategies that create a unique sound.
Class 2: Music
Discussing how we create memorable music. Lyrically- Rhythmically - Melodically
Explaining what a 'hook' is and why it is so important in the song structure.
Learning chord structure and common progressions.
Developing creative writing skills through common song structure format.
Listening to exceptions to the rules and discussing why these are still successful songs.
Class 3: Lyrics
Examining rhyming schemes.
Understanding the roles of the verse, chorus, etc. in terms of story development.
Learning how to create descriptive metaphors.
Working individually and collaboratively to write lyrics and a common chord progression.
Class 4: After words
Learning how to create good song titles.
Exposed to general rules of copywriting original material.
Practicing and recording their original song.

The instructors for this class will be Scott Spindler and Rosanna
Paterra. The two are both teachers at U Rock and are also the acoustic
duo, Scott and Rosanna. Scott and Rosanna are singer, songwriters who
released their first album, 3 Cheers, in the summer of 2013 and plan to
