The word Tenebrae is the Latin word for “darkness” or “shadows.” During the service, the candles on the front altar are extinguished gradually, and the lights in the sanctuary are lowered. As it grows darker and darker, we reflect on the great physical and emotional pain that was very real for Jesus on that Friday long ago. The whole land where Jesus was crucified was covered in darkness between noon and three o’clock, according to Matthew’s gospel (27:45).
