April is National Volunteer Month, and Jack and Jeanie Snodgrass are great examples of people dedicated to helping others.
Many people may imagine retirement as a time to slow down and relax, but that’s not the case for Jack and Jeanie. The couple spend countless hours volunteering around the retirement community where they live, Friendship Village of South Hills, as well as in the Greater Pittsburgh area.

Jack and Jeanie aren’t the only older adults giving back to the community. According to a Huffington Post article, today’s Baby Boomers are 40 percent more likely to volunteer than people in their same age group in 1989. This growing trend shows how older adults are increasingly remaining active and committed to their community as they age.

Jack serves on three different advisory committees, volunteers at the community’s Village Store and acts as a tour guide to potential residents on weekends. Jeanie facilitates the monthly book group, chairs the program committee and sits on several committees. The couple even serves coffee at The Friendly Mug, the community’s cafe, and act as ambassadors for new residents.
Jack and Jeanie’s love for volunteering doesn’t stop at the community where they live. Jack also volunteers at the St. Clair library and at the Restore for Habitat for Humanity store. He even draws on his former career as a corrosion engineer to serve as an editorial reviewer for one of the committees within the ASTM International, a group working with metal corrosion. Jeanie volunteers with the American Association of University Women.
