Upper St. Clair Woman Killed in Fire Identified

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner said the manner of her death was accidental.

The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office has released the identity of the woman who died when her house caught on fire Saturday night.

Joann Monnig, 74, died from acute smoke and fume inhalation, the medical examiner said.

The manner of her death is listed as accidental.

Monnig's home, located at 1840 McMillan Road, burnt to the ground at 10 p.m. Saturday. Upper St. Clair police said her daughter was also inside the burning house and managed to escape through a second-story window. When the officers arrived to the scene, they said they tried to enter through the front door, but the smoke and flames were too intense.

Monnig's body was found just before noon on Sunday.

The Allegheny County fire marshall has not determined the cause of the fire.

The house was a saltbox home with a cedar exterior and a shake roof. According to neighbors, the house had been listed for sale with Howard Hanna for about four years.
