USC Firefighters Respond to Apartment Fire, Find Drugs

An man and Bethel Park woman are facing charges after the and responded to reports of smoke coming from their apartment unit.

According to the criminal complaint, the firefighters and police officers went into a unit at 9:45 p.m. on Valentine's Day because it was filled with smoke and found Randy Oswald, 27, of 404 Painters Dr., Upper St. Clair and Tricia Lynn Vavro, 28, of 2782 Bertha St., Bethel Park, sitting inside.

Police found a clear bag of suspected marijuana and three bongs in front of the sofa Oswald and Vavro had been sitting on, according to the criminal complaint. Police also saw a driver's license, and three debit and credit cards belonging to a man who reported his wallet missing a year ago.

After the fire department evacuated the building with 11 apartments, the firefighters found that the broiler control knob on the oven was in the on position and caused the smoke inside.

Oswald and Vavro are facing drug charges. In addition, Oswald is charged with one count of recklessly endangering another person, one count of having lost property and one count of access device fraud.

Both of their hearings were continued on Monday.

Stolen iPhone
Kaylin Lyon, 18, of 1479 Yorktown Dr., Lawrence, PA, is charged with one count of theft by unlawful taking.

According to a criminal complaint filed by Upper St. Clair police, staff used a metal detector wand to discover that Lyon was hiding a teacher's stolen iPhone in her underwear.

Police stated that when the teacher left her office during a meeting with Lyon, her iPhone went missing.

The teacher asked another staff member to watch Lyon when she left the office, but the staff member briefly looked away and Lyon asked to use the restroom.

School staff found the iPhone's cover in the ladies' room trash.

Lyon left school with her mother. Her preliminary hearing on Monday at was continued for 30 days.
