5-Year Review Underway For Former Warminster Base

A PFAS review is being conducted at the former Naval Air Warfare Center in Warminster Township.

WARMINSTER TOWNSHIP, PA — A five-year review of the former Naval Air Warfare Center is underway as officials work to ensure that the base is safe from PFAS contaminants.

Communities in Bucks and Montgomery counties have dealt with "Forever" chemicals from the former Willow Grove Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base and also NADC/Warminster, which was previously used by the Department of Defense.

Those communities include Horsham, Hatboro, Abington, Upper Dublin, and Upper Moreland in Montgomery County, and Ivyland, Warminster, Northampton, Upper Southampton, Warrington, and Warwick in Bucks County.

In Warminster, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection is conducting the sixth five-year review of the base.

Officials said the purpose of the review is to ensure that selected remedies are effectively protecting public health and the environment.

The five-year review is mandated for Superfund sites where remedial action results in contaminants remoaning above levels that allow for unlimited use and restricted exposure.

Public participation is encouraged in the process. That is open until March 30.

The review is expected to be completed by Nov. 21.
