Begun in 1998 by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the Audubon Society, the count was the first online citizen-science project to collect data on wild birds and display the results in nearly real-time. In 2019, more than 160,000 people are expected to take part in the count, which creates an annual snapshot of the nation's distribution and abundance of birds.
