Beware ASTDR Cancer Data Review

The recently released ASTDR Cancer Data Review 1985-2013 is misleading. Understanding it requires critical thinking .

First of all, the data isn't current. It's generally about three years old. Secondly, it limits itself to three zip codes. It contains quite a few straw men and red herrings (Brain Cancer is not common to PFOA & PFOS exposure.) The CDC recently listed Bucks County as the only one in PA with elevated cancer rates. Thyroid disease IS associated with the foam and it is a known endocrine disrupter. Diseases of organs in the alimentary canal are common. Not all of these are cancers. The decreases listed were from before 1994, for one zip code, and the other was 12 years old and also from a single zip code. There are a lot of apples to orange comparisons and understanding it requires very careful reading. It will take a proper epidemiological study from a leading medical center such as Harvard or Penn to draw meaningful conclusions.

Finally, the ASTDR is squeezed between the Navy and the EPA,which has become corrupt enough that some congresspeople have called for criminal prosecutions of the EPA. It is well known that they mislead or failed in their tasks to protect people during 911, Flint, The Gold King Mine Disaster and more. During the Reagan Administration the EPA was required to give industry a say in how they operate an it is now quite politicized.
