Making Resolutions?

The Library Can Help Get You Started

“All of us every single year, we’re a different person. I don’t think we’re the same person all our lives.” – Steven Spielberg

I’ve never been one for New Year’s resolutions. It’s always seemed to me that if I want to do something (or not do something), I should start as soon as possible, not wait for an arbitrary date on the calendar. Sometimes, the resolutions – regardless of when I start them – stick; some don’t. I figure that’s a constantly changing life.

That doesn’t mean that I haven’t tried a New Year’s resolution or two in the past. There was the year I resolved to be nicer to my sister (I was 10). I think it lasted a couple months before she really annoyed me. I also once resolved to spend more time cross-country skiing. That May, I moved from Seattle to Florida. So much for that! While I’m not hoping for snow, I may revisit that one now that I’m not in Florida.

But there are things we can do year to year to make ourselves better people. We do change throughout our lives and the library is the perfect place to grow, to stretch and exercise our minds and find resources to help us exercise our bodies.

For the frustrated writer, we offer many books on everything from writing a journal (come to our Bullet Journal DIY on 1/22) to self-publishing an eBook. We have a number of online tools to help expand your year: Learning Express, has tutorials, test preparation and skills practices. One of our most popular online tools is Lynda.com, which offers classes in business, software, technology and creative skills from beginner to expert levels. For the more craft-oriented, we offer books, dvds and programs on all sorts of upcycling, knitting and other needlecraft, gardening, cooking, and more.
