Aces Sink Vikings, 8-4

Lower Merion overcomes a shaky start to defeat West Chester East in boys' lacrosse.

Despite a shaky start the Lower Merion Aces prevailed to defeat the West Chester East Vikings in boys’ lacrosse on Tuesday.

Tuesday’s game started fast and furious with both teams totaling four goals in the first four minutes.

Blair Bonner got things started for the Vikings by streaking down the left side of the field and burying a cross body shot into the corner of the Lower Merion net.

However, the Aces responded quickly with a goal just a minute later.

The Viking would again jump out to a one-goal lead as Patrick Whalen scored for West Chester East.

Just 49 seconds later the Aces tied the game 2-2 with 7:16 left in the first quarter.

The furious pace continued as Lower Merion scored three more goals, and East scored one, giving Lower Merion a 5-3 advantage to end the quarter.

Whalen scored the last goal of the quarter for East with 2:39 left on the clock.

Whalen received an excellent entry pass from Bobby Procopio near the goal line and drove the ball home to bring the Vikings within two.

The pace slowed in the second quarter as neither team scored.  The Vikings got a stellar performance from goalkeeper Kevin Greene who thwarted the relentless Lower Merion pressure.

It wasn’t until halftime that either team broke the scoring stalemate.

After a big hit near mid-field, the Vikings’ Jonathan Logan retaliated and was given a penalty.

Lower Merion took advantage of being one man up and scored a goal with 8:22 left in the third, bring the score to 6-3.

It looked like the Vikings might try to mount a comeback as Bonner bounced in a shot from 12 yards out early in the fourth quarter.

However, Lower Merion would respond as they had all night.

Dominating possession for most of the quarter, and the rest of the game for that matter, the Aces’ relentless pressure paid off as they scored two goals in the final four minutes.

East squares off next against Malvern Prep at 3:45 on Thursday.
