New updates emerged in the horrific incident in Chester County, where police say a mother used her body to shield her baby from attacks.

WEST CHESTER, PA — New details emerged in the case of the infant boy who was stabbed in the stomach and then tossed out into the snow on Wednesday in Chester County, as the child is now recovering following surgery, authorities said.

The 3-month-old was rushed to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where he underwent surgery. He is in critical but stable condition, according to the Chester County District Attorney's Office.

The boy's father, Michael Phillips, 44, of Coatesville, has been charged with attempted homicide and aggravated assault. He was arraigned Thursday afternoon and booked at Chester County Prison without bail.

The incident occurred at around 11:30 a.m. on the 2000 block of Smithbridge Drive in Coatesville.

Phillips had made comments about "having to sacrifice the baby," and charged the mother with the knife in his hand, police said.

Phillips attempted to stab the infant multiple times but only managed to strike him once, in the abdomen, according to the DA.

The mother then ran outside with the baby in her arms, and sent their other child, a 9-year-old boy, to get help, officials said.

Once outside, Phillips grabbed the baby from the mother's arms and threw him into the snow, the DA said. The mother then used her body to shield the infant from further attacks until law enforcement reached the scene.

Coatesville police, Washington Hose Ambulance Company, and Westwood Paramedic Company worked together swiftly to get the infant to the hospital as quickly as possible.

“Yesterday Coatesville Police and local EMS heroically worked to give this infant a chance to survive," Chester CountyDistrict Attorney Christopher de Barrena-Sarobe said in a statement. "Our thoughts go to the family during this incredibly difficult time.”

The investigation remains underway.
