I wanted to share this c. 1890 photo, (courtesy of the Chester County Historical Society) mainly that it shows a building that still stands. The former Spence's (now the restaurant, "Social") was built along E. Gay, next door to West Chester's early railroad station. It's hard to believe that busy freight/passenger line was located on Gay Street, but this was the days of the horse-drawn rail car, before the concept of "Uptown/Down" town existed. In fact, Spence's was then run by two black entrepreneurs, James and his brother Spence. Look closely and you can see their names above the cellar door.
