Township officials said the land is adjacent to other township-owned parcels and is valued for its natural beauty and green space.

The purchase will benefit the community by providing a 36-acre green space corridor protected by the township and other entities.

More open space preservation could be on its way as well.

In the November general election, residents backed a referendum calling for the township to spend up to $15 million for purposes of financing the acquisition of interests in real property for the preservation of environmental areas and open space for passive recreational purposes and benefits within the township.

The ballot question received 14,816 yes votes (68.88 percent) to 6,695 no votes (31.12 percent).
