Gather Place Holding Program On Poet Langston Hughes

YARDLEY, PA —In celebration of Jazz Appreciation Month, The Gather Place Museum will hold a tribute to Langston Hughes this Saturday.

The event takes place at 2 p.m. Saturday in the newly-renovated old A.M.E. Church on South Canal Street.

The program by Shantel Hubert, a local jazz vocalist and educator, is entitled: "The Intersection Between the Veiled and the Masked: A Tribute to Langston Hughes."

It's a multi-faceted tribute to Hughes, an American poet, playwright, novelist, and Harlem Renaissance artist. Through original musical performances, poetry, and lecture, Hubert will explore Hughes’ work.

Backed by a jazz trio, Hubert will explore timeless work in connection with contemporary calls for social and racial justice.

“During these especially challenging times, it is important to share how artists—especially writers of the Harlem Renaissance—used their works as a vehicle for community upliftment, connection, and social change,” Shantel said.

This event is co-sponsored by Yardley’s bookstore, The Commonplace Reader, and by the Langhorne Council for the Arts.
