Grey Nun Academy In Lower Makefield Is Closing

School leaders said declining enrollment and other financial difficulties made keeping the school's doors open next year impossible.

LOWER MAKEFIELD TOWNSHIP, PA — Grey Nun Academy, a Catholic school in Lower Makefield for students from pre-K through 8th grade, is shutting its doors.

In a letter to parents on the last day of school last week, the school, which has been in the community for nearly 60 years, said declining enrollment and other financial difficulties made keeping the school open any longer impossible.

"We sincerely wish there were another way forward," read the letter, signed by board of trustees Chairwoman Jean Kuhn and Sister Denise Roche, president of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart. "Regrettably, there is not."

The letter said that enrollment at the school, on Quarry Road, was even lower than expected for fall 2019.

"Though difficult to accept, this decision is final," the letter said.

Kuhn and Roche noted that the news would "come as a shock" and apologized to families for the timing.

An informational session on selecting a new school is planned for Wednesday, June 19, at 6 p.m. for families in the Sacred Heart Chapel. The meeting is designed for parents of children grades 4-7.

"This is a very painful time for anyone associated with our cherished Grey Nun Academy," the letter read. "We ask for your patience and your prayers in this difficult time."
