'Let's Beat Breast Cancer' Rally In Yardley Saturday

YARDLEY, PA —Yardley Borough Hall will be front and center Saturday in the fight to beat breast cancer.

Organizer Susan Schneider with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is holding a "Let's Beat Breast Cancer" rally from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday at Yardley Borough Hall on South Main Street.

The Washington, D.C.-based non-profit organization in Washington that researches how food choices impact health is holding rallies throughout the country.

Schneider said the Yardley rally features drumlines from both the Pennsbury and Neshaminy marching bands to "beat the drums" and help raise awareness that by making lifestyle changes (food choices, exercise, avoiding alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight) the rate of breast cancer and recurrence is dramatically reduced.

"Our campaign is about prevention," she said. "It is scientifically proven that by modifying lifestyle: eating plant-based foods, exercising, avoiding alcohol, and maintaining a healthy weight, the rates of breast cancer and recurrence are dramatically reduced. Lifestyle has a tremendous influence on our health and well-being, much more than most people realize. A genetic predisposition is not a sentence; Only 10 percent of breast cancer is truly genetic, the rest is influenced by lifestyle. Our goal is to empower people, to help them understand their choices matter."

She said that rallies will take place across the nation in the next few weeks, marking the first time for such a campaign. PCRM held a rally last year, with drumlines, in front of the White House last year.

Schneider, a PCRM-licensed Food for Life instructor, is partnering with the Pennsbury Community School to offer a "Let's Beat Breast Cancer" class. Registration is open, and classes start in a few weeks.
