YARDLEY, PA — The Pennsbury Scholarship Foundation has announced a new scholarship for students in the school district.

The foundation held a reception recently to recognize the new endowed namesake scholarship in memory of Dolores Carlen, a longtime Pennsbury employee. The scholarship will be awarded each year to a Pennsbury student, beginning in June.

Carlen worked for 20 years in the district's pupil services department before retiring to Florida. According to foundation officials, she likely was the first face many new students and their parents encountered when they came into the district office.

Along with her work, Carlen was an active community volunteer and worked helping in her children's classrooms, supporting Pennsbury High sports, cheerleading, Sports Nite and the marching band.

Her four daughters all were Pennsbury graduates. A scholarship was established in the name of her youngest daughter, Brenda Carlen Zellner, after she passed away of cancer in 2005.
