Pride Flag Dedication Returns To Yardley After Absence

A Yardley councilman has revived the Pride flag dedication after a two-year absence. It takes place at Yardley Borough Hall Tuesday night.

YARDLEY, PA —The borough will hold a Pride Flag dedication before Tuesday night's council meeting, bringing back a ceremony that has been absent for the past two years.

Councilman David Appelbaum told Patch Monday that he has revived the dedication, which takes place from 6:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in front of Yardley Borough Hall for Yardley’s LGBTQ+ Pride Month Celebration.

Appelbaum said the Pride flag will fly next to a U.S. flag and a Juneteenth flag that will be displayed at a ceremony later this month.

"In this day and age, it's not enough to just hang a flag. It's not a strong enough message," Appelbaum said. "We need to show up and celebrate together. I cannot be silent. We have too much to lose whether it's Pride Month or Juneteenth. I know how important it is to recognize everybody. It's easier to do what's wrong, but it's so much harder to do what's right. There's so much at stake. We want people to know that Yardley Borough is a safe place and we are your ally."

This event is sponsored by the Yardley Borough, Community Outreach Committee led by Appelbaum, The Rainbow Room of Doylestown, and Yardley Tattoo.

There will be a Pride Month proclamation and some speeches supporting the LGBTQ+ community, he said. Free Pride flags will be given out to all the attendees.

Appelbaum gave thanks to former Councilman David Bria for fighting for LGBTQ+ rights and recognition in Yardley.

"I have stood in solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community before and after the borough's anti-discrimination ordinance was introduced by my friend and colleague David Bria in 2018. We must educate and protect the civil rights, the human rights of all," Appelbaum said.
