2 RI Children Stranded In Mexico After Vacation Emergency: Reports
The children's cruise with their grandparents ended abruptly in fear and uncertainty after their grandmother suffered a heart attack.
WARWICK, RI — A Warwick mother is having to put on a "brave face" for her two children, ages 6 and 8, after they ended up stranded in Mexico after their grandmother had a heart attack while they were on a cruise vacation together, according to multiple reports.
The mother, Sarah Martin, told WPRI and WJAR that her children's grandmother was so critical that the cruise ship had to dock in Mexico instead of returning Miami as planned. The children are now being cared for by their grandfather while their grandmother is in a medically-induced coma in Cozumel, according to WJAR.
The days since have been as confusing as they have been scary, with the U.S. Embassy in Mexico falsely telling Martin that her kids could only return on the cruise or with emergency passports, WPRI reported. She then had to turn to a port agent, who filed U.S. Customs and Border Protection paperwork for the children, according to the outlet.

Now, until the paperwork is processed, all Martin can do is wait — which is even more nerve-wracking considering her daughter is running out of her ADHD medication and her son is running out of his epilepsy medication, she told WPRI.
"They keep on asking me the same thing, mommy, how am I gonna get back to you? And it's just really sad because I don't have an answer," Martin added to WJAR.
