Rhode Island Lawyer Disbarred For 'Misappropriation' Of $415K

The Rhode Island lawyer was previously sentenced to two years in prison.

A Rhode Island attorney was disbarred for his "misappropriation" of $415,000, according to the state supreme court.

Kevin Brill, 66, "admitted that he misappropriated approximately $415,000 from a trust in violation of the Massachusetts Rules of Professional Conduct," the supreme court said in its disbarment order.

Brill was sentenced in 2021 to two years in prison "in connection with a long-running scheme to embezzle funds from trusts for which he served as trustee," according to the U.S. Attorney's office.

"From 2012 to July 2017, Brill served as a trustee for three family trusts with fiduciary responsibilities to protect and preserve the trust funds and make expenditures for the benefit of the beneficiary," the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a media release.

"Instead, Brill embezzled and misappropriated more than $600,000 from the trusts and used the proceeds for personal expenses including the purchase of a vehicle, a vacation home in Vermont, major renovations to the vacation home, and his personal credit card bills," the release said.

Brill "also was ordered to pay a special assessment of $1,000, a fine of $15,000, and restitution in the amount of $381,662.81," the supreme court order said.

Brill was forbidden from petitioning for reinstatement for five years, according to the order.
