An air quality alert was already in effect for Rhode Island when the state warned that it will get even worse due to wildfire smoke.

The air will be unhealthy "for sensitive groups due to fine particles" starting Wednesday, according to the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.

"Bands of heavy wildfire smoke will be moving into the region, with fine particle readings increasing to UNHEALTHY for sensitive groups on the Air Quality Index beginning midday," the department said in a media release. "Bands of heavy smoke from wildfires in Northern Minnesota will continue to move into Rhode Island with elevated fine particle readings into Thursday."

The department said to expect poor air quality, reduced visibility and the smell of smoke.

The department had previously issued an air quality alert Wednesday and the National Weather Service said Tuesday it was to remain in effect until noon Thursday.
