MA Man Sentenced For Bringing Roosters To Rhode Island For Cockfights: Feds

PROVIDENCE, RI — A Massachusetts man was sentenced for bringing roosters to Rhode Island for cockfighting, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Luis Castillo, 38, was sentenced Wednesday by U.S. District Court Judge Melissa R. Dubose to two years of probation, a $200 fine and a $100 special assessment, according to a media release from the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Castillo had pleaded guilty in January to violating the Animal Welfare Act "in connection with his role in a 2022 cockfighting operation," the release said.

"As part of his plea, Castillo admitted that he travelled from Massachusetts to Rhode Island with roosters to participate in cockfighting for, sport, wagering, and entertainment," according to the release.
