Rhode Island is heading into a heat advisory.
The heat advisory begins at 11 .m. Thursday and will remain in effect until 8 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
"Heat index values (of) up to 99 expected," the National Weather Service predicted.
"Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur," the agency warned.
"Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors," the National Weather Service advised. "Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances."
Those working or spending time outside were warned to take extra precautions.
"When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening," according to the National Weather Service.
"Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke," the National Weather Service said.
"Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible," the agency recommended. "To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 911."
