New Study Analyzes Shoplifting Rates In All 50 States — See Where RI Ranks

A new study analyzed shoplifting rates in all 50 states.

The study, conducted by the researchers at Abogados NOW, a "Hispanic Marketing Agency for Law Firms," examined "shoplifting figures from the FBI Crime Data Explorer and compared the number of reported incidents with the number of retail businesses in each state," according to a media release.

"The research calculated the number of shoplifting cases per 10,000 retail businesses to identify where retailers face the greatest pressure," the release said.

Rhode Island ranked a respectable 12th out of the 50 states with 387.82 shoplifting incidents per 10,000 businesses.

The worst state was New Mexico, which had 1,277 shoplifting incidents per 10,000 businesses.

New Mexico was followed by Tennessee and Maryland.

The state with the fewest incidents per 10,000 businesses was Alaska with 177.42.

Florida had the second-lowest rate and was followed by Maine.
