Jamestown Canyon Virus Detected in Tiverton Mosquito Pool: State

TIVERTON, RI — Jamestown Canyon virus has been detected in a Tiverton mosquito pool, two state agencies announced.

In addition to the Jamestown Canyon discovery, more West Nile virus was found in Cranston, East Providence, North Providence and Woonsocket July 27, the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said in a media release.

Jamestown Canyon virus is mosquito-borne, according to the release.

"The virus circulates primarily between deer and mosquitoes but can also infect humans," the release said.

"People can be infected and not develop any symptoms or may experience flu-like symptoms," according to the release. "Rarely, more serious central nervous system diseases, including meningitis or encephalitis, can occur."

There is no vaccine for Jamestown Canyon virus and no medication to treat it, the release said.
