New Rhode Island Professional Football Team's Name, Logo, Colors Unveiled

The Breakers begin play this spring.

PAWTUCKET, RI — Rhode Island's new professional football team's name, logo and colors were revealed at a launch party at launch party inside Centreville Bank Stadium.

"The introduction of the Rhode Island Breakers marks a new chapter in the state's storied professional football history, which dates back over a century," the United Football League said in a media release.

"The original Providence Steam Roller, founded in 1916, was a charter member of the NFL and notably won the league championship in 1928 — the first and only time a now-defunct team has won the title," the release said.

The Breakers begin play this spring at Centreville Bank Stadium and will wear "Riptide Blue, Beacon Yellow, Nor'Easter Navy and Whitecap — all of which pay homage to Rhode Island's "Ocean State" nickname, the coastal waters, and connection to the region's historic lighthouses," according to the release.

The team logo, "Rooted in Rhode Island's rich maritime heritage," includes the "state's interlocking initials ... with a lighthouse representing the 'I' rising from the bold 'R,'" the release explained.

A "lighthouse has its lamp lit to lead the way during the roughest seas, and represents a beacon of resolute energy and community pride," the release said.

The Breakers will be coached by former NFL quarterback AJ McCarron.

McCarron, an All-American with the Alabama Crimson Tide and the XFL's Most Valuable Player in 2023, previously coached the UFL's Birmingham Stallions in 2026 and is moving with the team to Pawtucket.
