Deadly Block Island Plane Crash Under NTSB Investigation

The Federal Aviation Administration also said it was investigating the crash.

BLOCK ISLAND, RI — The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating Wednesday's deadly crash at Block Island State Airport.

"NTSB is investigating the July 30 crash of a Piper P28A airplane near Block Island, Rhode Island," NTSB Media Relations said in an email.

"Preliminary information indicates the airplane crashed while attempting to land at the Block Island State Airport," the email said. "An NTSB investigator arrived on scene today."

The Federal Aviation Administration also said it will investigate the crash.

A Piper Cherokee was "involved in an accident" shortly before 12:30 p.m., the corporation said in a news release, the Rhode Island Airport Corporation reported.

The FAA said the accident involved the plane crashing into trees after landing.

The corporation said in a media release the three passengers were taken to Block Island Medical Center.

One of the three died en route.

The on-site NTSB investigation involves "documenting the scene and examining the aircraft," the media relations email said.

"The aircraft will then be recovered to a secure facility for further evaluation," the email said.
