Rabies can be prevented by vaccinating pets, staying away from wildlife, and seeking prompt Rabies Postexposure Prophylaxis after potential exposure, according to the CDC.

"Stay safe, protect your pets, and remain vigilant," Gloucester police added. "Together, we can prevent further incidents and safeguard our community."

Police are urging anyone who thinks their animal may have been exposed to rabies or sees any wildlife acting strangely to call Glocester Animal Control during business hours at 401-568-3885, after hours to the Glocester Police 401-568-2533, or to the Department of Environmental Management directly at 401-222-3070.
