Rhode Island Jobs Drop By 500 In 1 Month

Rhode Island lost 500 jobs in one month, the state's Department of Labor and Training reported.

But while jobs at Rhode Island businesses were down by 500 from March to April, the state's unemployment rate decreased by 4.5%, according to the DLT's latest report.

The national unemployment rate held steady from March to April at 4.3% but was up 0.1% from April 2025.

"The number of unemployed Rhode Island residents — those residents classified as available for and actively seeking employment — was 26,500, down 900 from March. The number of unemployed residents was up 100 over the year," the DLT reported, noting the number of working Rhode Islanders was "557,400, down 2,400 over the month and down 10,700 over the year."

The Rhode Island labor force of 583,900 in April was down 3,300 from March and down 10,600 from the previous year, according to the DLT.

Unemployment Insurance claims for first-time filers in April averaged 661 in April, the DLT reported. That was down from 1,457 the previous month.

"Claims were down an average of 118 a week from April 2025," according to the DLT.
