Rhode Island Nor'easter: High Wind Warning, Coastal Flooding Advisory

Severe weather starts Friday as a Nor'easter bears down on Rhode Island.

The National Weather Service issued both a high wind warning and coastal flood advisory in advance of the storm.

"Damaging winds will blow down branches and power lines. Power outages are expected," the Naitonal Weather Service warned.

Travel may be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles," the agency cautioned.

"People are urged to secure loose objects that could be blown around or damaged by the wind," the National Weather Service said in the warning, which was to remain in effect until 2 a.m. Sunday.

The coastal flood advisory said to expect a "foot of inundation above ground level."

"Splashover and Minor coastal flooding is expected in the lowest lying areas along the south coast of Rhode Island and Massachusetts over multiple high tide cycles late today through this weekend," according to the advisory, which was to remain in effect until 8 p.m. Sunday.

"A few immediate coastal roads may briefly flood due to wave action," the National Weather Service said. "In addition ... minor beach erosion is also possible."

The weekend's full moon will raise tide levels and lead to major coastal flooding, according to AccuWeather.

"The nor’easter will affect southeastern New England from Friday into Monday night," AccuWeather said. "The strongest winds and heaviest rain are expected from Friday night through Saturday night across Rhode Island, central and eastern Massachusetts, Connecticut, Long Island, New York, southeastern New Hampshire and the southern Maine coast."
