Rhode Island Rip Current Warning: National Weather Service

Rhode Island faces a high rip current risk, the National Weather Service warned.

The rip current risk began Monday morning and was to remain in effect until the evening.

"Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water," the National Weather Service warned.

"Swim near a lifeguard," the National Weather Service advised.

"If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Don't swim against the current," according to the recommendation.

"If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline," the National Weather Service said. "If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help."

The National Weather Service forecast called for showers and patchy fog Monday with a high temperature of about 76 degrees.

The fog was to continue on a cloudy Monday night as the temperature dropped to a low around 68.

A north wind will blow between 3 and 5 mph.
