Rhode Islanders Second Biggest Spenders On Engagement Rings In America: Study

The residents of only one state spend more.

Rhode Islanders spend more on engagement rings than the residents of any other state in the nation but one, a recent study revealed.

The average engagement ring purchase runs a Rhode Islander $11,365, according to the study conducted by Los Angeles-based jeweler Mark Brouman.

Only New Yorkers forked over more at an average of $11,692.

"New York couples spend an average of $11,692 on a diamond engagement ring. South Dakota couples spend $3,005. That is an $8,687 gap, close to 400%, for the same purchase," says a press release that accompanied the results of the study.

"New research from Mark Broumand compiling data from Rare Carat, Blue Nile, The Knot, and other jewelry industry sources maps that divide state by state," the release said. "The Northeast dominates the top, with the West Coast close behind. At the bottom, rural Mountain West and Midwest states set a very different price ceiling. The national average of $5,200 sits between those two worlds and tells neither story accurately."
