New Snow Accumulation Estimates Released For Rhode Island

A winter storm warning is in effect for Rhode Island from 7 a.m. Sunday to 8 p.m. Monday.

"Heavy snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 13 and 19 inches. Winds gusting as high as 35 mph," the National Weather Service said. "Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult to impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Monday morning and evening commutes.

The weather service said people should try and delay travel during this time period. The secondary story is the cold as temperatures Saturday will just reach 15 degrees and it will feel as cold as -11 with the wind chill factored in.

Temperatures will drop into the single digits Saturday before the snow arrives on Sunday. Four to eight inches of snow is forecast during the day on Sunday, according to the weather service. Another 5 to 9 inches of snow is expected Sunday night.

There could be an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow on Monday.

"Our snow forecast for Sunday and Monday hasn’t changed much," wrote WPRI.com meteorologists. "We’re still expecting generally 12-18″ for the region, less near the coast, maybe a little more in northern Rhode Island." (View their snow map here).

Tuesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 21. West wind around 10 mph.

Tuesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 5. West wind around 6 mph.

Wednesday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 23. West wind 6 to 9 mph.

Wednesday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 4. West wind 3 to 5 mph.

Thursday: Partly sunny, with a high near 21. Northwest wind 3 to 8 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 3. Northwest wind around 7 mph.

Friday: Mostly sunny, with a high near 23. Northwest wind 7 to 10 mph.
